Abstract
1.1. The lipids and lipoproteins isolated at densities of less than 1.006, 1.006–1.063 and 1.063–1.21 g/ml from human and fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) plasma have been compared.2.2. Plasma lipids in the two species differed in that triglyceride was present at much lower concentrations in fox than in man, while phospholipids reached elevated values in the former.3.3. High density lipoproteins accounted for more than 75% of the total lipoproteins of densities less than 1.21 g/ml in the fox.4.4. Results from polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, agarose column chromatography, analytical ultracentrifugation and apolipoprotein electrophoresis consistently suggest that molecules exhibiting characteristics typical of high density lipoproteins are present in the 1.006–1.063 g/ml interval.5.5. Comparison with data in the dog then suggests that the fox, in which seasonal hormonal cycles have been demonstrated, may provide a convenient model for the study of the relationship between hormonal factors and plasma lipoprotein profile.
